Tropes: Werewolf, Alpha Wolf, Fated Mates, Dying Heroine, Trapped as His Wolf, Elemental Magic, The Chosen One, Found Family

Two tortured souls. One chance at survival.

A mysterious illness. No hope of a cure. As death snares her in its icy grip, Mara’s drawn to the water. One last swim. One last chance to feel…free.

Until fate intervenes, leading an injured, dying wolf to her car.

She doesn’t know he’s a man. A werewolf. Or that a fire elemental locked him in a cage and slowly, painfully, tortured him until he hovered on the brink of death.

Caring for the wolf gives her purpose. Even if has to be short-lived.

Until one night when everything changes.

Secrets will be revealed. Destinies changed forever. And Mara? She’s the pawn in a deadly game.

One that just might change the course of the world.

While A Shift in the Water didn't have quite the same level of intensity as you would find within any of Patricia Eddy's military romances, it was no less of an emotional ride. Mara - a neonatal nurse with a mysterious illness - has accepted that death awaits her and does all that she can to enjoy her time left. Cade - a shifter Alpha who's been cursed to remain as his wolf - feels himself losing more and more sanity to the beast the longer that he stays trapped by the curse.

What struck me most about this book was the individual struggles that both of the main characters were facing, and how they found solace and support from the other. Some books focus on instant love - here, there was an instant comfort between Mara and Cade, and a similar interest in trying to help the other simply survive.

It was a lovely book, with the kind of romance that slowly builds between characters as they learn more about themselves through each other. The magic - and the heat! - made for a thrilling story that was easy to devour, and though the climax felt like it left more questions than answers, it's clear that there's a lot of story left to learn about this pack.
